INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Police say an officer shot a gunman who was trying to force employees back into an Indianapolis convenience store.

Police spokesman Officer Christopher Wilburn says the wounded man was taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition after the shooting about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Wilburn says officers patrolling the area on the city’s east side spotted a vehicle circling a parking lot near the Circle-K store. The officers reported the vehicle stopped abruptly and a man ran toward the store with a semi-automatic rifle.

Wilburn says officers confronted the man and he pointed the rifle toward an officer who then shot him.

No officers or store employees were hurt.
