LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan carrot growers have voted to continue paying an assessment to operate a program that promotes their crop.
Seven producers representing more than 66.4 million pounds supported the Michigan Carrot Industry Development Program in a referendum. Two producers representing 10.4 million pounds voted against it.
Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Director Jamie Clover Adams says the program will continue for an additional five years, ending July 7, 2019.
The program is designed to support and create marketing opportunities for Michigan carrots through crop and market information, advertising, promotion and appropriate research.
It was established in 1998, with assessment collection beginning in July 1999. By law, it must be resubmitted for grower approval every five years.
