EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Lane County College might increase tuition by $3 per credit hour to help erase a $12.6 million budget deficit.

The budget trouble has been caused by a 30 percent decline in student enrollment over the past four years.

The Register-Guard newspaper reports (https://is.gd/tiXFH3) more than 100 people packed Monday night’s meeting of the Lane Community College Board.

Some students at the Eugene school said they can’t afford a tuition increase that would boost the price to $98 per credit hour. Others said it’s better to increase tuition than cut faculty and programs.

The board plans to continue its budget discussions May 14.

Gov. John Kitzhaber signed a bill last month ordering a commission to examine whether it’s feasible for the state to provide free tuition at community colleges.
