KIMBERLY, Ala. (AP) - Strong winds demolished the fire station in Kimberly, took the roof off a church and knocked down several homes.

Mayor Bob Ellerbrock says the storm hit Monday night a few minutes after a tornado warning was issued for the town along U.S. 31 north of Birmingham.

Firefighter Don Lalonde says firefighters got on the ground as the storm wiped out the fire station.

The roof was pulled off the old sanctuary at the Kimberly Church of God and the stained glass was blown out of the new sanctuary. Minster Stan Cooke says about 25 people who took shelter in the basement were unharmed.

A nearby resident, Tim Armstrong, says he ran to the center of his home before a tree hit the front door and glass shattered.
