SEBASTOPOL, Calif. (AP) - A financially strapped Sonoma County hospital has closed after eleventh-hour negotiations failed to reach a deal to keep the doors open.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1iBHt7K) dozens of supporters and local residents gathered outside Palm Drive Hospital Monday as maintenance workers secured the building and posted closure notices at all entrances.

A trailer from a local charity collected whatever could be salvaged of the Sebastopol hospital’s 72-hour supply of food.

The hospital’s board voted earlier this month to shutter the facility and file for bankruptcy protection.

Officials say they are continuing negotiations and hope an agreement can be reached in the near future to reopen the hospital in some other form.

An ambulance will be stationed outside the medical center for two weeks to take patients needing emergency services to other hospitals.
