ALPINE, Utah (AP) - Authorities say a 17-year-old Utah boy who was critically injured in an ATV accident over the weekend was not wearing a helmet when he and a passenger slammed into a concrete barrier on the edge of Lambert Park in Alpine.

Lone Peak Police Det. Dave Ventrano says the teen was thrown from the ATV and landed about 85 feet away at approximately 3 p.m. on Sunday. He says the teen was flown by Life Flight to the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with severe head injuries.

Fire Battalion Chief Joe McRae says a female passenger wasn’t wearing a helmet either, but only suffered minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.
