MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) - The state has loaned $1.4 million to the struggling Muskegon Heights school system to help end its relationship with a charter operator.

The Muskegon Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1fKWQWC) Michigan’s emergency loan board approved the request on Monday. The loan will help the district end its agreement with Mosaica Education Inc. on June 30.

The Muskegon Heights Public School Academy board voted Saturday to end the contract. A new company will be sought for a three-year deal.

The loan also will help the district meet payroll through the end of the month.

The system’s state-appointed emergency manager, Gregory Weatherspoon, says Mosaica and the board agreed the separation agreement was necessary.

The school system was created in 2012 as a solution to debt that put Muskegon Heights Public Schools into financial emergency.
