ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The University of Michigan is getting $7.7 million to create new cognitive science institute.

The gift from alumnus Marshall Weinberg was announced Monday by the Ann Arbor school. The businessman on Saturday is getting an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at spring commencement.

The Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science will be part of the university’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. An aim is to help students learn more about how the human mind and brain processes information, choices, emotions and language.

The institute is a cooperative effort between the departments of Linguistics, Philosophy and Psychology. Courses for the institute are also offered through the departments of Statistics, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Political Science and Computer Science.

The Weinberg Institute will ultimately offer a graduate student certificate.
