YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - Yankton County commissioners have approved a burn ban at the request of area fire officials.
Paul Scherschligt is the county’s emergency management director. He says the area has seen problems with controlled burns this year because of high winds and dry conditions.
He says the long-term outlook for soil moisture in the area isn’t promising and the ban won’t be lifted until the rainfall increases.
The Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan reports the ban applies to any outdoor fire, including campfires, warming fires, charcoal grill fires, or the prescribed burning of fence rows, fields, wildlands, trash and debris.
It excludes fires contained within liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves, fireplaces within all buildings, charcoal grill fires at private residences, and permanent fire pits or fire grates on some picnic grounds and campgrounds.
