UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (AP) - Five firefighters in the St. Louis suburb of University City have been suspended for three months without pay over their involvement in local political campaigns.
City Manager Lehman Walked suspended the union firefighters on Wednesday. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (bit.ly/1faWa22 ) reports that the firefighters are accused of violating a statute that forbids first responders from being involved with campaigns while in uniform or on duty.
The disciplinary action came after a half-dozen firefighters posed beside a red fire truck with two City Council candidates in separate flyers distributed before the April 8 municipal election.
Firefighters and the city have been engaged in a prolonged contract dispute.
