RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - The harsh winter that strained Rutland’s winter road maintenance budget means there won’t be much money for spring paving, a city official said.

Public Works Commissioner Jeffrey Wennberg said the $100,000 overspent on the winter maintenance budget was about 20 percent over the $500,000 budget.

“The small storms, the 3-inch storms we had at the beginning of the winter, those kill your salt budget,” Wennberg told the Rutland Herald (https://bit.ly/1fuSHWF ). “The big ones, the ones that take hours and hours to clear out the downtown, those aren’t too bad on salt, but they kill us on overtime.”

As a result, Wennberg said he will cut $73,000 in paving, equivalent to about a half a mile of city streets. He also will forgo about $20,000 in equipment purchases and about $7,000 from traffic safety.

“All things considered, I consider that a win,” he said. “A lot of folks would be happy to be only 20 percent over now.”
