DELHI, Iowa (AP) - Officials have broken ground on restoration of the drained Lake Delhi in northeast Iowa.

The Telegraph Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1mFd0G4 ) more than 100 people gathered Thursday for a ceremonial event, which involved area residents and restoration leaders.

The first phase of construction is already underway, with work on a new concrete dam. The second phase, installation of a spillway, is waiting on permit approval from the state Department of Natural Recourses.

The project is expected to cost up to $17 million.

The 9-mile-long lake on the Maquoketa River was drained when the dam collapsed during flooding in 2010. The lake bed has been dry since then.
