ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) - A Kane County judge has reduced the prison sentence to 9 years for a DeKalb County man convicted in a crash that killed an 11-year-old boy.

The Daily Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1mEZAtF) that Judge James Hallock agreed with Benjamin Black’s appeal. Black had argued that Hallock shouldn’t have considered that the crash led to injury or death when he sentenced Black. The 29-year-old originally was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Black was driving under the influence of heroin and another drug in February of 2013 when his vehicle struck the rear of another car in Kane County, killing Matthew Ranken of Sycamore.

That car was stopped because of an earlier accident. A front-seat passenger was severely injured.

Black pleaded guilty in November to two counts of aggravated DUI.
