IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - All lanes are open again following a series of collisions on Interstate 5 in Orange County that killed two people and injured five and backed up traffic for miles.

Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi says the female driver of a sedan and her male passenger were killed in the initial crash in Irvine about 4:40 a.m. Thursday.

He says the sedan was apparently struck by a minivan. Two people in the van were hospitalized for moderate injuries.

The California Highway Patrol says four vehicles were involved in the crashes, which left debris strewn over a large area. Occupants of two other vehicles suffered minor injuries. The circumstances of the collisions are under investigation.

Two northbound lanes on the major Southern California artery were closed for several hours.
