MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A federal judge has ordered officials in a predominantly white and affluent suburban New York village to take concrete steps to open its community to minorities.
The order was issued Tuesday by U.S. District Court Judge Arthur Spatt.
The judge had previously ruled the village of Garden City, on Long Island, discriminated against minorities in some of its zoning decisions.
Spatt said Garden City must conduct training for all elected officials and housing employees on fair housing issues. It also must work to enforce equal housing initiatives.
A Village Board statement says it believes it did not act with discriminatory intent. It says it complies with applicable fair housing requirements. It is considering an appeal.
Census figures show the village 30 miles east of Manhattan is 93 percent white.
