WASHINGTON (AP) - A former background investigator who did work under contract for the Office of Personnel Management has pleaded guilty to falsifying his work.

Thirty-four-year-old Brian Rapier of Sumter, S.C., entered the plea Thursday in federal court in Washington. He has agreed to pay more than $173,000 in restitution and faces up to five years in prison at sentencing July 25.

According to a statement of offense, Rapier worked as an investigator under contract to do background investigations.

Prosecutors say Rapier wrote dozens of reports saying he had interviewed a source or reviewed a record regarding the subject of the background investigation. Authorities say he had not done the interviews or checked records.
