JACKSON, Mich. (AP) - The city of Jackson is considering adopting an open data policy that would increase access to information held by city officials.
The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports (https://bit.ly/1mBZk0U ) City Council members have debated for weeks the merits of providing residents and business owners with select data and information that might otherwise be accessible via Freedom of Information Act requests.
Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the first reading of an ordinance that calls for City Manager Patrick Burtch to create an open data policy and procedure within a year.
City officials along with University of Michigan School of Information graduate students have worked on the open data policy since January. The newspaper says it could be a first of its kind in Michigan if council approves the second reading May 13.
