WINGATE, N.C. (AP) - The president of Wingate University says he plans to retire from the job in May 2015.
Jerry McGee made the announcement on Tuesday. His retirement will mark the end of a 23-year tenure as president.
Under McGee’s leadership, Wingate has secured hundreds of millions in gifts and grants for scholarships and campus development. The school also attained university status and nearly tripled enrollment.
McGee also officiated 404 college football games in 36 years. He is a member of the South Atlantic Conference Athletic Hall of Fame, Wingate University Athletic Hall of Fame and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
In 2006, McGee received North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
The school said a search for the next president will begin immediately.
