SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Long Island’s Suffolk County has formally joined Nassau County in requesting state permission to install automated speed cameras in school zones.

The county legislature endorsed a resolution supporting speed cameras on Tuesday. State lawmakers have the final say on whether to allow the devices. Motorists caught speeding in a school zone would face $50 fines.

Legislative leaders and Gov. Andrew Cuomo support the idea. The state Legislature is expected to consider it later this spring.

Supporters say the cameras would protect the safety of children. The devices would also raise millions for county government.

Officials in neighboring Nassau County endorsed speed cameras last week.

New York City already has 20 school zone cameras and is asking to add 120 more.
