WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a corrections officer at a Washington jail has been charged with smuggling a cellphone to an inmate for money.
Fifty-one-year-old Darren Malry, an officer at the Correctional Treatment Facility, was arrested Monday and charged with bribery. He pleaded not guilty in federal court in Washington on Tuesday.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Malry works for Corrections Corporation of America, a private company that provides services to the D.C. Jail.
According to the charging documents, an undercover FBI agent gave Malry a cellphone, cigarettes and rolling papers, which Malry was to give to an inmate at the facility.
Prosecutors say the agent also gave Malry $750 for giving the items to the inmate.
Officials say agents recovered the contraband from the inmate after Malry delivered the items.
