ALBERTSON, N.Y. (AP) - A 95-year-old Albertson man has died and his wife is critically injured following a fire at their Long Island home.
Nassau County police say the fire was reported at about 10:40 a.m. Tuesday in Albertson.
Police officers found the man and woman near the front door of the two-story Cape Cod structure. The officers pulled them from the home. They were taken to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola.
Police say the man, who was not immediately identified, died. His wife was later transferred to the burn unit at Nassau University Medical Center.
Police and volunteer firefighters reported heavy smoke conditions.
An official with the fire marshal’s office tells Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/QvHxLl ) the cause does not appear to be suspicious.
It started in the basement; a cause has not been determined.
