PHOENIX (AP) - The Senate has failed to pass a bill that would have allowed government bodies to deny public records requests they deem too burdensome or harassing.
The Senate failed to pass House Bill 2414 with a 17-6 vote on Monday.
The bill would have given government bodies discretion to deny a records request if they believed it was harassing or burdensome. It was opposed by the Arizona Newspapers Association.
Opponents said the bill would make it easier for government agencies to deny public records requests. A separate bill in the House would have allowed public records custodians to charge $20 an hour for labor relating to retrieving public records. However, that bill did not get a hearing.
