SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police say a paraglider has sustained critical injuries after barely lifting off and slamming into a hillside about 25 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Officials say the 32-year-old man crashed Sunday afternoon near a steep rock bench in Draper known as Point of the Mountain.

Unified Fire Authority Battalion Chief Brian Anderton tells the Salt Lake Tribune (https://bit.ly/1jsgcAx) the man’s parachute collapsed when he was hovering 10 feet to 15 feet above the ground, knocking him into a nearby hillside.

The paraglider was unconscious about 3 p.m. when a helicopter flew him to a hospital. He had been wearing a helmet.

Anderton said he didn’t know the extent of the man’s injuries or why the parachute failed.

Adventurers say a singular wind tunnel makes the spot ideal for paragliding.
