TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A long-troubled downtown Tucson redevelopment district is getting a pass on a state mandate that it build a hotel before it again spends money on other work.
In a move resulting from the wasting of millions of dollars, the state in 2010 imposed an accountability requirement that the Rio Nuevo project move forward with construction of a hotel as originally envisioned.
However, the Arizona Daily Star https://ow.ly/vZATC) reports that a bill recently signed into law by Gov. Jan Brewer lifts the hotel requirement.
Rio Nuevo chairman Fletcher McCusker calls the Legislature’s approval of the bill lifting the requirement a testament to efforts by current Rio Nuevo officials to restore the district’s credibility.
