LA PORTE, Texas (AP) - It’s San Jacinto (juh-SIN’-toh) Day in Texas.

A commemorative ceremony has been scheduled Monday at the San Jacinto Monument at La Porte (luh-PORT’), near Houston. Texas State Historian Bill O’Neal will take part.

It’s been 178 years since the historic Battle of San Jacinto with Mexican troops that led to Texas winning its independence.

The San Jacinto Day Festival will be held Saturday on the grounds surrounding the monument. Organizers say hundreds of history re-enactors are expected to take part to help remember the landmark battle fought on April 21, 1836.
