TURKEY, Texas (AP) - The 43rd annual Bob Wills Day celebration in West Texas begins Wednesday.

It’s a tribute to the man known as the King of Western Swing, and runs through Saturday in Turkey, about 100 miles southwest of Amarillo.

A gospel jamboree kicks off the party at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Wills, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, died in 1975. He formed the Light Crust Doughboys in 1931, and later put together the Texas Playboys.

Hollywood discovered Wills in the 1940s, and he and the Playboys appeared in numerous movies.

Official Bob Wills Day is Saturday. Activities begin that day at 7 a.m. with a biscuit and gravy breakfast. There is also a free outdoor concert, lawnmower races and dances.
