4-year-old girl dies in Des Moines shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police say a 4-year-old girl died after an apparent accidental shooting in her family’s apartment.

KCCI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1nkX2n1 ) that the shooting happened Monday evening at an apartment south of the city’s downtown.

The girl died at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.

Police say the child’s parents and two younger children were home when the shooting occurred.

Sgt. Jason Halifax says the investigation was continuing, but it appeared that “safe weapons handling practices were not followed.”

No charges have been filed. Police didn’t release the names of those involved.
