WINDBER, Pa. (AP) - Officials say a western Pennsylvania stream will soon be home to swimming trout for the first time in about 80 years thanks to a pollution treatment project near a former mine.
The (Johnstown) Tribune-Democrat (https://bit.ly/1fqVNy4 ) reports that a $306,000 state grant awarded in 2010 paid for the passive treatment system in Weaver Run alongside the Windber stadium complex in Somerset County.
Rich Wargo, president of the Paint Creek Regional Watershed Association, says polluted water running out of the former Berwind Mine 33 is sent through limestone to neutralize the acidic water.
Caged trout were placed in the stream for several weeks last spring and fall as a test. Officials plan to stock the stream with brook trout next week in preparation for the April 12 opening of trout season.
