AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The University of Texas system says the Texas-Pan American athletic program will be absorbed into the new Rio Grande Valley campus and will continue to compete at the Division I level in the Western Athletic Conference.

Texas-Pan American and Texas-Brownville are being merged to create the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Sports programs currently at the Texas-Brownsville campus will be dissolved at the end of the 2014-2015 academic year.

Texas-Brownsville competes in the NAIA and students on those teams will be allowed to stay on scholarship or transfer without penalty, system officials said Wednesday.

Texas Pan-American has 14 varsity teams and will add women’s soccer in 2014 and men’s soccer in 2015.
