SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Only two of the seven companies offering insurance plans in Utah on the federal government’s online marketplace are co-ops or nonprofits.
The Obama administration hoped the health care overhaul would increase competition in the marketplace with a host of options.
But in Utah, five of the seven insurers are subsidiaries or are affiliated with national companies: Aetna, United Healthcare, Humana, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Molina.
The Utah Insurance Department says the nonprofit is Select Health Inc. and the co-op is Arches Mutual Insurance Company.
Arches is one of the 23 consumer-run, co-op insurers created with the help of $2 billion in federal loans. Arches received nearly $94 million.
Utah isn’t tracking year-to-date enrollment by insurer, meaning it’s unclear whether consumers are choosing the nonprofits or the bigger companies.
