EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A Lane County sheriff’s spokesman says a man found fatally shot near church property in north Eugene was a former Eugene police union president.

The Register-Guard reports (https://is.gd/lOPygn ) that Sgt. David Bones says the man who died Tuesday was identified as 44-year-old Erik Humphrey.

Police Chief Pete Kerns said Humphrey worked 20 years as a community service officer in Eugene. The chief called him a “kind, gentle and conscientious man.”



Lane County sheriff’s officials are investigating the death. They have declined to release details.
