ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Attorneys for three Buncombe County men have filed court papers to have their convictions in the 2000 death of a man overturned.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported (https://avlne.ws/1opheFG) the lawyers for Larry Jerome Williams Jr., Damian Mills and Teddy Lamont Isbell are asking a judge to overturn their convictions.
Walter Rodney Bowman was shot to death Sept. 18, 2000.
The request accuses the district attorney and Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office of withholding DNA evidence that would have cleared them. Williams and Mills pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Isbell pleaded guilty to conspiracy.
Two co-defendants were cleared in 2011 even though they had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
But the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission ruled in December there was not enough evidence to support the claims of Williams, Mills and Isbell.
