PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after a 2013 burglary attempt resulted in the shooting death of his getaway driver.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 29-year-old Adrian De La Cruz was sentenced Friday.
De La Cruz pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in February. He originally faced a charge of first-degree murder during the commission of a crime.
De La Cruz was shot and wounded outside a northwest Phoenix nightclub on March 30, 2013.
An off-duty Phoenix police officer working security at the club reported seeing several suspects trying to steal a small refrigerator from his pickup truck.
It led to a shootout involving the suspects, the officer and a nightclub employee.
De La Cruz needed weeks of hospitalization to recover from his wounds before his arrest.
