CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A former Charlotte real estate lawyer has been sentenced to more than six years in prison for her 2009 conviction on mortgage fraud charges.
The Charlotte Observer reported (https://bit.ly/1jKMKZG) that Victoria Sprouse was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court.
Sprouse was convicted on 18 charges, including bank fraud, money laundering and conspiracy charges. She and her co-conspirators were accused of getting millions from schemes involving more than $15 million in fraudulent loans.
U.S. District Judge Martin Reidinger ordered a new trial after Sprouse’s conviction. He said a jury instruction was improper under a new U.S. Supreme Court ruling in another case.
The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated her conviction, saying said Sprouse did not object at the time and failed to prove the instruction affected the outcome.
