PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Providence Journal says it will appeal a judge’s decision denying the newspaper access to records related to the state police investigation into a 2012 graduation party hosted by Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s son.
The Journal filed notice in Superior Court Monday (https://bit.ly/1eDACuI ) that it will appeal the ruling by Judge William E. Carnes Jr.
The newspaper says it’s the first significant test of the revised state Access to Public Records Act in 2012 allowing judges and others to balance the public’s interest against individuals’ privacy needs.
Carnes ruled April 1 that disclosing the records in the Caleb Chafee case would amount to an unwarranted invasion of the privacy interest of the individuals in the records, including the governor.
A teenager was hospitalized and the governor’s son was accused of violating the state’s social-host law.
