PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire at a three-story apartment house in Providence that injured three firefighters and a resident.

Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Joseph R. Desmarais says the Monday night fire started at the rear of the building and quickly engulfed all three floors.

The building’s 15 residents, including about seven children, had evacuated before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters were ordered to evacuate the building for fear that it might collapse.

Two firefighters had burns and the third firefighter injured his eye. The firefighters and an injured resident were treated and released from Rhode Island Hospital.

Desmarais says the building is so heavily damaged it will likely be torn down.
