4 Tenn. teens in SC manhunt ordered detained

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Four teenagers who were extradited to Greene County, Tenn., after leading South Carolina police on a day-long chase last week have been ordered detained.

A 16-year-old boy is charged with murder in the death of his 36-year-old father. His three companions - a 16-year-old girl and two 15-year-old boys - are charged with accessory after the fact to murder. All four also are charged with theft.

A Greene County Juvenile Court judge on Friday ordered that the four remain in custody for the time being. Greene County Sheriff Steve Burns said they are being held at a youth facility in Johnson City.

The Associated Press is not identifying the suspects because they are juveniles. The AP also is not identifying the victim in order to protect the juveniles’ identities.

Memphis Police Department spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said officers descended on East High School after the department received a call from Shelby County Schools saying trespassers with guns might have been on school property.

Rudolph said a student reported seeing a person or people at the school who were in a Thursday off-campus altercation with guns involved. The student told an official at the school, Rudolph said.

A phone message sent to parents during the search said students were safely in their classrooms with teachers during the lockdown. Worried parents went to the school to check on their children.

The lockdown was lifted about 10:30 a.m., after officers reported finding no trespassers, Rudolph said.

Classes resumed, though parents were allowed to check on their children.

SMYRNA, Tenn. (AP) - A 13-year-old boy who was trying to change a flat tire alongside Interstate 24 in Smyrna has died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver.

Miller told media that the boy and his mother were beside their car when another vehicle hit both of them and then drove away from the scene.

“The victim was over into the emergency lane, had its hazard lights on,” Miller said. “They did everything they could to be safe.”

Police said a witness to the accident followed the other vehicle to a business in Davidson County and called officers, who charged 33-year-old Tina L. Wilson with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

“Thank God they did that,” Miller said. “So many times, if no witness comes forward, it makes it more difficult to find the responsible party.”

Dreams dashed in fatal college tour bus crash

ORLAND, Calif. (AP) - It was a busload of opportunity: young, low-income, motivated students, destined to become the first in their families to go to college, journeying from the concrete sprawl of Los Angeles to a remote redwood campus 650 miles north.

Those dreams shattered for some Thursday in an explosive freeway collision that left 10 dead - students, chaperones and both drivers - and dozens hospitalized.

Desperate families awaited word about loved ones Friday, while investigators tried to figure out why a southbound FedEx big rig swerved across the grassy divide of California’s key artery before sideswiping a car and slamming into the tour bus, which burst into a furious blaze.

The Serrato family, whose identical twin 17-year-old daughters set off on the adventure on separate buses Thursday, had a panicked, sleepless night. Marisol made it to their destination, Humboldt State University, but the family had no word on Marisa, who had been aboard the now-gutted bus, for nearly 24 hours.

They received the official word Friday evening when dental records confirmed Marisa was among the dead.

“Marisol is devastated,” the girls’ 23-year-old brother Miguel Serrato said.
