PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A former Maine State Police chief who authorities say admitted having sexual contact with a 4-year-old relative has been indicted on a new charge.
Seventy-three-year-old Andrew Demers is now facing a charge of gross sexual conduct.
Demers was charged last month with unlawful sexual contact with a child younger than 12.
The Cumberland County district attorney’s office announced Friday that a grand jury had indicted him on the new elevated charge.
He is free on $5,000 cash bail.
Defense lawyer Walter McKee last month told the Portland Press Herald that he would be looking into the circumstances of Demers’s statement to investigators, including “how he was questioned, where he was questioned and his mental condition at the time.”
