RIVERVIEW, Fla. (AP) - The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says it’s investigating a horse rescue group after a pair of malnourished horses given to the group showed no sign of improvement after more than three months.

The Tampa Tribune (https://bit.ly/1ewWZfL) reports that an Arabian mare and a Tennessee Pinto mare were donated to RVR Horse Rescue on Jan. 24 after the sheriff’s office was awarded custody of the animals. On April 2, a detective from the department checked on the horses and found they were underweight and apparently malnourished.

Detectives have begun a criminal investigation into the horses care and have filed to regain custody of the animals. Deputies say RVR has denied neglecting the animals and has refused to surrender the horses.
