INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indianapolis probation officer has resigned amid criticism that he failed to report violations by a 16-year-old who was later charged with killing an Indianapolis man.
Court documents show the teen remained free for a month while awaiting a hearing on 13 probation violations. Nine were violations of his house arrest.
The Indianapolis Star reports (https://indy.st/1qIsBEo ) probation officer Tracy McDonald could have requested an arrest warrant after the third house arrest violation Feb. 15. That would have kept the teen in detention until an April 7 hearing.
McDonald didn’t report any violations until March 5 and recommended the teen remain on house arrest.
The teen is charged with fatally shooting Nathan Trapuzzano while the 24-year-old was on a morning walk April 1.
Probation officials didn’t return calls seeking comment.
