NEW YORK (AP) - Transit authorities are putting New York City subway riders on the alert after a skimming device was found at a MetroCard vending machine at the Columbus Circle station.

The card-reading device and a hidden camera were discovered Wednesday night on the vending machine at the north end of the southbound No. 1 train platform.

Skimmers steal information from the magnetic strip on credit and debit cards.

The MTA is urging riders who purchased a MetroCard at that location to check with their bank or credit card company for any unauthorized activity.

The agency says a customer made the discovery.
