RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A Rapid City man shot and wounded by a Highway Patrol trooper after a chase last fall has been sentenced to spend 30 years in prison.
Twenty-seven-year-old William Chandler pleaded guilty last month to aggravated eluding, aggravated assault and attempted first-degree escape. Judge Janine Kern on Thursday said his actions merited a long prison sentence, and she gave him 50 years with 20 years suspended on the assault charge.
Chandler was accused of leading officers on a chase on Interstate 90 after a trooper tried to pull him over for speeding last September. Authorities say he was caught and arrested but managed to escape his handcuffs and steal a squad car. Chandler was shot after allegedly threatening to back the squad car into a trooper.
