RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Officials with the N.C. Department of Public Safety have worked to take down a website that included names and personal information of thousands of crime victims who applied for financial assistance from the state,

WRAL in Raleigh reports (https://bit.ly/1qIFNZZ) the problem was discovered by one of its reporters researching the state’s Crime Victims Compensation program.

Department spokeswoman Pam Walker said the breach occurred in 2012 after the department created a new website and moved it to a state server. Walker said while the information was available to the public for more than a year, state workers believe it’s highly unlikely that anyone accessed the site.

The Crime Victims Compensation program gives victims up to $30,000 for medical bills, lost wages and counseling. Crime victims can apply for financial help.
