TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida universities and colleges could keep secret the names of candidates for president under a bill approved by the Florida House.
Friday’s House vote was 104-9. The bill heads next to the Florida Senate which has yet to hear a similar bill during this year’s session.
The legislation is being pushed at the same time that Florida State University and the University of Florida are starting to search for a new president.
Under the bill (HB 135), university and college boards could hold a secret meeting to go over candidates and pick finalists. Once finalists are chosen, the schools would have to release the names 10 days before a final vote.
The bill would also allow universities and colleges to keep secret the names of candidates for provost and dean.
