OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A San Francisco Bay Area doctor who met patients at Starbucks, Burger King and other chain restaurants has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly selling prescriptions to patients who didn’t need them.
An indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court in Oakland on Thursday night accuses 62-year-old Toni Daniels of conspiracy to commit health care fraud, conspiracy to distribute and dispense controlled substances, distribution of controlled substances and failing to file a tax return.
Authorities said from 2010 to 2011, Daniels sold patients oxycodone and hydrocodone without conducting any exams or obtaining medical histories.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1iF0NxO ) that prosecutors said Medicare and Medi-Cal paid $64,000 in false claims for the drugs she prescribed, which they said were medically unnecessary.
She is being held without bail in Dublin, Calif., until her next court appearance Monday.
