MILWAUKEE (AP) - Authorities say there were no working smoke detectors in a Milwaukee home where a fire claimed a man’s life.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s office says 35-year-old Phoukham Athathip was killed in the fire that started in a small cottage on the city’s north side about 11 p.m. Thursday

When fire crews arrived, heavy smoke and fire were pouring from a first-floor living room. A bystander told firefighters that someone was still inside the home.

Firefighters removed the man from the house. He was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Deputy Milwaukee Fire Chief Terry Lintonen tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1gSvJIm ) no smoke detectors were found in the home.

No one else was at the home. The cause remains under investigation.
