HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - A Huntington region food bank is nearing an anti-hunger milestone.

The Empty Bowls fundraiser for the Facing Hunger Foodbank is expected to top 1 million meals raised since the initiative began in 2003.

The 11th Empty Bowls fundraiser is scheduled for Friday. Organizers say they are confident the 1 million meal mark will be reached during this year’s drive.

Diane Van Horn is director of an agency partially supported by the food bank. She says the Empty Bowls campaign has raised about $20,000 annually for the past five years.

Facing Hunger Foodbank serves approximately 113,000 people in West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.
