GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A 43-year-old man who says he accidentally shot his friend while the two were drinking in a shed near Carbondale has been sentenced to a year of probation.

The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reports (https://bit.ly/1qm2JA0 ) Carmello Cruz was sentenced Wednesday for the Oct. 13 shooting of his friend Rocky Mendez. Cruz pleaded guilty to tampering with physical evidence and third-degree degree assault with a deadly weapon.

After the shooting, he fled the scene at the urging of his friends and threw the weapon onto a nearby hill. He later called police and turned himself in.



Cruz also was sentenced to 90 days in jail but has already served 179 days.
