ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - The charitable foundation created by western New York supermarket founder Robert Wegman is giving $17 million to the University of Rochester.
The university says Tuesday that it will receive $10 million for the Institute for Data Science and $7 million toward construction of the new Golisano Children’s Hospital.
The gifts from the Rochester-based supermarket chain bring to $20 million the amount of recent contributions by the Wegman Family Charitable Foundation.
The University of Rochester has made the emerging field of data science the focus of its five-year strategic plan and plans to construct a $25 million, 50,000-square-foot facility. Data science involves making sense and use of vast quantities of information and data.
The new $145 million hospital already is under construction and is expected to open next year.
