SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Savannah’s 1930s-era River Street trolley has been returned to rails along the waterfront after spending about a year stored away at the Georgia State Railroad Museum.
With the help of two cranes, the streetcar known as Dottie was hoisted off a flatbed truck Monday and placed on two platforms fitted with new steel wheels and axles.
The Savannah Morning News reports (https://bit.ly/1hw6nV7) that the $81,000 overhaul was needed after the weight of the retrofitted diesel-electric engine put the streetcar out of commission in early 2013.
Veleeta McDonald, Savannah’s mobility and parking services director, said the city is going to do some test runs for a few weeks to make sure everything works the way it is supposed to before it becomes fully operational again.
